Version 23

Part L new version

The Part L program has been updated to interface with the latest version of SBEM, the Government calculation module. We have introduced new features in Part L, these include a simple method of dividing a room into daylit areas, which will automatically be considered in CO2 calculations. Over the past year, there have been several updates to the Part L program to reflect changes in SBEM; it is expected that there will be several more changes in the coming year.

Connect 17th Edition

The Connect package has been updated with several new features. These include: an autosave facility, long board names, board notes, sub-main routing utility, drawing legend and multiple copy/paste. The 17th Edition of the IEE Regulations (BS 7671) will be issued in January 2008. During the coming year, we will be updating the Connect package to enable early compliance with the 17th Edition.

Design Simulation

Hevacomp’s Design Simulation package can be used to simulate detailed building and plant response. For example, the effect of opening windows on room overheating can be simulated. You can also check overheating frequency (number of hours/annum a room temperature is exceeded). Design Simulation can also be used to check compliance with Part L of the Building Regulations. The features in the Design Database package have been extended to enable projects that have been set up using CAD input to be used directly with Design Simulation. This means that for any project that you have set up using Design Database CAD input, you can easily carry out dynamic thermal simulations.

Hevacomp’s extensive databases of emitters, luminaires and protective device data have been further extended and updated. There is new miniature, moulded case and ACB data from Terasaki, MEM and Dorman Smith. There is new luminaire data from Concord, Marlin and Tamlite and new emitter data from Myson, Clyde, Kermi, Zehnder, Purmo and MHS.

Version 22

New Part L building regulations will come into force on 6th April 2006. We have produced a new program, for checking against Part L2A (2006), this program forms part of the Design Database package. This new program incorporates SBEM, the Government calculation module.

The new Hevacomp Part L program will work as follows:

  • Wall and window constructions will automatically be extracted from the Design Database data.
  • All room and surface dimensions will automatically be extracted.
  • Inside design conditions, heat gains and occupancy profiles are set up using standard databases.
  • Data for heating, cooling and HWS plant must be specified for each zone.
  • A Part L (2006) calculation will then be run, simply by pressing a button.
  • The Part L results will show the building carbon dioxide emission (kg/year) and compare this to the CO2 emission for the notional building, which will have been automatically set up by the software. The results will show whether the building passes or fails Part L (2006)

The results will optionally produce a full printout in the Government preferred layout, which can be submitted to the Building Control Officer.

A new SAP calculation procedure is being published for dwellings and Hevacomp will provide a new SAP calculation program. SAP calculates energy performance and uses a new SAP scale (1 to 100). The dwelling Carbon dioxide emission rate and Environmental impact rating replace the Carbon index. SAP (2005) also includes lighting energy, solar water heating, thermal bridges and renewable and energy saving technologies. Hevacomp's SAP (2005) program will be accredited by BRE.

With the Connect package, you can now produce IEE, ECA and NICEIC certificates. Data for the certificates can be entered directly into Connect, or you can use our new package Connect Lite, which can be run on laptops or PDAs on site to gather test information at source. This data can then be downloaded back at the office and integrated into the Connect project to produce and print certificates. Connect Lite will be distributed with the Version 22 update.

Hevacomp's extensive databases of emitters, luminaires and protective device data have been further extended and updated. There is new device data from Terasaki and MEM along with new luminaire data from ETAP, Beghelli and Trilux.

All Hevacomp’s design software will shortly be using Meteonorm, the world’s leading source of weather data from Meteotest. The Meteonorm database has climatological data of 7400 weather stations around the world incorporating measured parameters such as: solar radiation, temperature, humidity, precipitation, days with precipitation, wind speed and direction, sunshine duration. Selecting the location for a particular project will simply involve picking from a world map graphic.

Dynamic Simulation

Hevacomp's new dynamic thermal simulation package can be used with your existing and new Design Database projects. A building model can be set up using the new CAD input in Design Database. This means that all projects can be set up as normal to compute CIBSE heat losses and gains, then Dynamic thermal simulation can be used, if required, without any additional data input.

The Dynamic Thermal Simulation package enables complex buildings to be accurately analysed. The features of Design Simulation include:

  • A dynamic fabric module enables complex constructions to be constructed and viewed.

  • Windows are constructed from a database of glass and blind types in a new glazing module.

  • Design simulation can be used to compute accurate heating and cooling loads, predict summertime temperatures and temperature frequency analysis, and compute annual energy and CO2 emissions. The package can be used to analyse a building for compliance with Part L (2006).

  • Simulation weather years are supplied and new simulation data for specific design days can be generated.

  • Analyses multi-zone air movement between rooms and outside. Detailed infiltration and ventilation flow paths can be set up for room and air movement is computed by wind forces and stack effect.

  • HVAC systems and controls can be designed or selected from a standard set.

  • Profiles can be defined for temperature, plant on/off times, gains and occupancy.

  • Plant design allowing annual building fuel, energy and carbon dioxide emissions to be predicted.

  • Frequency of room overheating can be assessed, and room and building cooling load requirements can be analysed.

  • Room heating and cooling equipment can be sized.

  • Room air or resultant conditions can be predicted with restricted equipment sizes.

  • External shading with 3D visualisation of shadows and with predicted internal sun-patch graphics. Hevacomp’s Design Database 3D CAD model is used to construct the building.

Computational Fluid Dynamics

Hevacomp in partnership with CHAM (UK) has achieved the vision of making Dynamic thermal simulation and CFD simply and cheaply available to all building services engineers.

The features of CFD include:

  • Room air movement studies using CFD from Cham (UK). Rooms are created in our CAD input module and objects placed on screen.
  • A comprehensive range of objects is available including emitters, diffusers, grilles, furniture and people.
  • Advanced analysis of grille and diffuser jet patterns using latest ASHRAE research has been pioneered by Hevacomp and Cham.
  • Diffuser throw patterns and temperature profiles can easily be visualised.
  • A full temperature distribution can be produced for the whole space.
  • Velocities in terms of direction and magnitude can be examined at any point.
  • Multiple slices in any plane can be produced for any of the data including velocity, temperature and pressure.
  • Buoyancy problems can be examined, for example, mixing of hot and cold airstreams.
  • Displacement ventilation schemes can be modelled and temperature stratification examined to ensure ideal conditions

2005

Version 21

Hevacomp released Version 21 of their industry standard design software in May. In this release we have added a new Whole building CAD input method, which speeds up room definition and automatically detect adjacent spaces when rooms are set up. Complex roof structures can be simply drawn, and then roof and roof-light components can automatically be associated with rooms below the roof structure. In addition, intermediate and ground floors can automatically be set up, detecting rooms above and below target rooms.

A new Profiles feature will be released, this enables you to set up complex profiles for occupancy, heat gains, room temperatures and plant. When you set up say room inside design temperatures, you have the choice of specifying a single temperature, or a temperature profile that you have set up to define the hourly temperatures required.

In late autumn, we will be releasing a dynamic thermal simulation package that can be used with projects that have been set up using our Design Database package. The new package will enable you to carry out detailed heat gain and loss simulations, summertime temperatures including mixed mode ventilation studies, overheating frequencies and extensive energy consumption and carbon calculations using plant simulation. You will also be able to use CFD to examine air movement in spaces. All of these features can be used with projects that have been created using our industry standard Design Database package. Full details of this add-on package will be released shortly.

We have updated and extended the databases of fabric constructions and glazing. You can now build up constructions layer by layer, using our extensive database of materials. This enables you to tightly control the data and properties of constructions.

For the Connect package, a new Favourites module will be released, this enables you to set up preferred data for various circuit types, which can then be used to quickly set up circuits with a single button press.

Hevacomp's extensive databases of emitters, luminaires and protective device data have been further extended and updated. There is new device data from Merlin Gerin, Bussman along with new luminaire data from Lamps and Lighting, Trilux, and Future Design. We now have extensive plastic pipework and fittings data with information from Aquatherm and Rehau

At the end of 2005, a completely new version of the Part L Regulations comes into force, with a new Carbon calculation. Hevacomp is involved in this project, with BRE and ODPM. During the coming months, we will be issuing interim updates so that you have the earliest opportunity to consider the new Part L legislation.

New Electrical design software

Hevacomp’s new electrical design software package has now been released. The package is available as a CAD module for Hevacomp's extensive CAD package, or as a self-contained electrical design package to supercede the existing Connect package.

With Electrical CAD you can import a building drawing using a DXF file or by directly linking to AutoCAD. Supply points, boards and busbars can be set up in real locations on the drawing, together with icons for sockets, switches, equipment, lighting, communications and alarms. Cables and trunking can be drawn linking components. Loads on boards can be linked to icons and loads can globally be set up if required. Projects may extend over multiple floors.

Whilst the CAD drawing is being developed, a schematic version of the system is simultaneously available, which shows components for all floors and boards can be moved around on the schematic independent of their actual CAD locations. This enables a full schematic drawing to be developed, whilst simultaneously working on floor layouts.

Electrical CAD enables full essential and non-essential board and way designation, together with multiple sources. Extensive databases of panel boards, busbars, cables and protective devices are available, together with a large icon library. Adjustable devices can be set interactively and powerful device overlay features are available. System calculations are extremely fast and comply with IEE 16th Edition requirements extended for harmonics calculations and increased neutral sizing. Reports can be printed or output to Word or Excel.

The Lighting CAD module has now been released for Hevacomp's new CAD package. Lighting CAD enables you to quickly set up rooms from a DXF file or AutoCAD, then design lighting systems using a lumen calculation, with point to point computations. Extensive lighting graphics can be displayed on the drawing including contours, intensity diagrams and 3D room and building views with wall illuminances. Vertical illuminance can also be computed. Emergency lighting can be designed. Daylight can be computed and integrated with artificial lighting. Luminaire schedules can be produced and lighting schemes can be plotted on the building drawing.

Hevacomp's CAD package also has modules for Ductwork and Air Conditioning, Heating, Chilled water, HWS and CWS. Our CAD package builds on the simplicity of our industry standard Design Database package to enable complete system design and 3D modelling to be carried out quickly and efficiently, without the overhead cost of a CAD package such as AutoCAD on every computer. For full details on what the package can do contact Nigel Bird on 0114 255 6680 or Paul Demetriou on 0208 446 6620 or email sales@hevacomp.com.

A completely new version of Connect is now available which includes: improved user interface, essential and non-essential supplies, a panel board database, protective device overlay feature, improved fault reporting, user defined motor specification, new icon library, a busbar database, reports can be output to Microsoft Word or Excel, extensive additions to the adjustable device database, oversizing of neutral to allow for harmonic effects, multiple supplies to the project.

Software solutions

As technology changes within the manufacturing industry and products become more complex, the selection process also becomes more difficult. Many manufacturers are now turning to the electronic catalogue, which can incorporate product selection software and comprehensive product details, to simplify product selection and specification.

Hevacomp are able to provide these software solutions and have worked with many leading manufacturers including Hitachi, Ideal Boilers and NuAire. The most recent production is the new MHS CD incorporating the full range of MHS products and Fastrack CAD drawings.

Ian Bradley of MHS commented, "As a pro-active company it is vital that we embrace the new technology that enables us to provide an ever improving service to our clients. Hevacomp have developed the MHS CD for us which allows the consultant to view technical information, select the appropriate product and integrate it into his CAD system. MHS is fully committed to provide the information the client requires in the format that is most suitable and an interactive CD is part of that policy."
